4 Tips to Get the Most out of Your Home Workouts

I hope you've been doing your best to stay happy and healthy at home. I know many of you have turned to virtual activities to replace in-person ones, and fitness classes are no exception.

As you probably already know, I've been running virtual fitness classes every week day (and if you haven't tried one yet, get on it ASAP they are so much fun)! I wanted to give you some tips to help you make the most of your home workouts! Here goes...

1) Clear a Space

Make a dedicated workout space that you use every day. Think of it as your "home gym" - and use it only for working out. That way, when you go to this space, your brain knows it's time to focus and workout!

It doesn't need to be anything fancy - literally the size of a yoga mat is all you need. If you have equipment, great! If you don't, no problem! As I always say, you don't need a fancy gym or special equipment to get in a good workout.

2) Schedule them in Advance

If you wait until the morning of to plan your workout for the day, you've waited too long. Set aside 10 minutes at the BEGINNING of each week and look at your calendar. Decide what days and time you can realistically commit to workouts. Big exam? Don't schedule a 2-hour hike on the same day (unless, maybe it's after the exam).

Have a lot of big commitments this week? That's no excuse! In fact, it's an even better reason WHY you should make time for exercise. Your workout is your time to clear your mind, de-stress, and get the endorphins flowing. Even just 10, 15, or 20 minutes is all it takes to boost your energy & get you feeling good.

3) Find Something to Hold You Accountable

It's easy to hide from a workout, put it off, or pretend like you never scheduled it - especially at home! You're better than that though, and you're not going to do that (not anymore, at least).

So, figure out what motivates you to workout when you don't feel like it. Is it a friend checking in? Is it checking off a box on a planner/calendar? Is it something you promised yourself as a reward (i.e. if I workout, I can watch some Netflix after)? Is it a physical reminder in your room, like a post it note with a reason WHY on it?

Figure out what you can do to motivate yourself because, let's be honest, after a long day I know it's easier to procrastinate and say you'll do it later. Look, it doesn't matter how great your beginning-of-the-week plan was if you don't follow through with it. Consistent actions = consistent results. Decide what you're going to do to consistently hold yourself accountable and consistently workout. Consistent workouts are when the magic happens.

4) Make it Social

This is probably my favourite tip of them all! Invite a friend or family member to a class with you or make up a workout together. I have seen some really awesome workout dates - from friends doing zoom calls during my classes to social distance runs with a friend.

I love the idea of getting social so much because not only do you both get the feel-good benefits of working out, but you also get to spend some QT with them! It's killing two birds with one stone!
